Lashing Dogs -- The Best Fungi Music in the Caribbean
Fungi music is an expression of British Virgin Islands’ unique culture and its people. A blend of the island's African and European roots, the result is an incredibly distinct BVI sound. The name fungi comes from a local cornmeal based dish (made from a hodgepodge of ingredients) of the same name. Also called a “cook up,” fungi (the kind you eat) is popular due to its fusion of different island flavors. Similarly, Fungi music is a colorful mix of different homemade instruments and styles.
Callaloo Poets
Eighteen writers from both the British and United States Virgin Islands have hatched, Virgin Islands Callaloo, an impressive collection of poems from the Caribbean by Callaloo Poets.
Tortola's First Recycling Company
BVI Glass Recycling, Tortola’s first recycling company, was first hatched by Mr. and Mrs. Wheatly Tomlinson after observing the amount of glass and cans thrown away after the BVI Carnival. A number of resorts, such as Peter Island Resort (www.peterisland.com), have also jumped on board. Best of all, youth in the area are also joining in the fun, as evidenced by the participation of the Youth Empowerment Project. BVI Recycling is located in Sea Cows Bay, Tortola.
