The Island’s Bounty: Eat BVI Local!

When most people hear the name BVI, they immediately think “Yachting Capital of the World.” Yet, with Anegada lobster, local conch, fresh papaya, mango, and passion fruit galore, the British Virgin Islands are beginning to define themselves as far more than sunshine and placid waters. In fact, the BVI's are home to some of the best local ingredients and recipes in all of the Caribbean.

Hidden Gems of the Week: Neptune's Treasure, Naomi's, and Stanley's

This week we couldn't resist making not just one, but three suggestions for local eats....

If you have a hankering for beachside dinning and a cool breeze, check out Stanley’s Welcome Bar on Cane Garden Bay. The smart money is on their “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” fish burgers, honey stung chicken, and local lobster.

Recipe of the Week: Caribbean Chili

If you’re down with the chili, check out the Firecracker 500 Regatta & Chili Cook-off hosted each year in the BVI or take a crack at making your own:

Sidney’s Peace and Love Restaurant

If you dig local eats like I do, then head over to the colorful Sidney’s Peace and Love Restaurant (284-494 4941) on Jost Van Dyke in Little Harbour. Good ol’ Sydney Hendrick knows all the honey holes in the British Virgin Islands and is sure to return each day with a boat full of goodies – all served on an open-air terrace along the water’s edge. While the local fish and lobster dinners (you can choose your favorite Spiny from a tub) are all the rage, don’t pass up a chance to sample some of the best BBQ ribs in BVI.

Preserving Nature’s Secrets is a popular film produced and shot by Ben Knight and Travis Rummel, the founding partners of Felt Sole Media. Still enjoying critical acclaim from their 2005 film, The Hatch, a fly fishing/conservation documentary, this dynamic duo has now directed their camera on the British Virgin Islands and plans for large-scale developments that will change the character and the environment of the  country.
