Lashing Dogs -- The Best Fungi Music in the Caribbean

Fungi music is an expression of British Virgin Islands’ unique culture and its people. A blend of the island's African and European roots, the result is an incredibly distinct BVI sound. The name fungi comes from a local cornmeal based dish (made from a hodgepodge of ingredients) of the same name. Also called a “cook up,” fungi (the kind you eat) is popular due to its fusion of different island flavors. Similarly, Fungi music is a colorful mix of different homemade instruments and styles.

Among the best Fungi bands in the BVI is the Lashing Dogs, a longtime gaggle of local musicians known as masters of Fungi. Catching a live Lashing Dogs performance is a must when traveling in the Caribbean, as these artists mix it up – dishing a blend of fungi, reggae, and a little American rock thrown in for good measure. The Lashing Dogs have also released a handful of recordings to date. To get your hands on their music, call Mr. Varisse Hodge at 494-2927.
