Catching the Big One

Find yourself a pleasure fishing license or temporary fishing permit before you bait up. A pleasure fishing license is good for day sailors and recreational charter boats where guests generally use hand lines. Expect  to pay $25 for a license that’s good for one year. If you’re a visitor that hopes to fish on charter boats and otherwise, pick up a 10-day temporary permit for $10 so you’re on the up and up.
 
A Temporary Fishing Permit can be obtained from the Department of Conservation and Fisheries, while Commercial, Pleasure, and Sport Licenses can be obtained from the Department of Natural Resources and Labour:
